Coloured Bull Terrier Club

18th November 2006

It was a great pleasure to judge the Coloured Club’s open show again, especially with such an impressive entry. The quality of the males was outstanding, with the bitches not having the same quality in depth. For best male and ultimately BIS was choice came down to Stokleyview Dark Destiny, Tyebar Groundpower and Sherrywells Red Dragon – all top class dogs. I would have been happy to put any one of them up and I’m sure they could change places on another day. Ultimately I placed them in the above order.

Overall type was excellent. There were lots of impressive heads on display, with few incorrect bites. Bone and substance were generally impressive. Toplines I found disappointing, with quite a few exhibits showing a dip behind the withers while moving. This contrasts with the American scene, where we still have too many bite problems. Dippy toplines, however, aren’t that common; if we have a topline problem in America it is with too much roaching over the loins. In terms of colour, there were lots black brindles and tricolours and too few true brindles, which is disappointing. Having placed a tricolour BIS, perhaps I should remind breeders that one of Miss Montague Johnstone’s favourite matings was a tricolour to a white carrying brindle, which usually produces excellent colour results, with a good proportion of true brindles.

My thanks to everyone for a wonderful day.
